London coronavirus crisis worsens with 36,000 new cases of Covid in one week

LThe Covid-19 crisis in Ondon is worsening, with nearly 36,000 new cases in a week, figures show today.

They show that 20 districts experienced an increase of at least 70% in confirmed cases in the week leading up to December 12.

  • Cases more than doubled in Richmond, which saw a 140.3% increase from the previous week, in Lewisham 111.5% and Lambeth 103.7%
  • Hammersmith and Fulham saw an increase of 98.4%, Enfield 94.5% and Wandsworth 92.1%
  • In Westminster, the jump was 87.7%, Camden 87.6%, Southwark 84.3% and Bromley 81.2%
  • London’s seven-day rate reached 325.2 new cases per 100,000 in the week to December 12, after doubling in less than a fortnight
  • Havering has the highest seven-day rate of 653.8, followed by Barking and Dagenham on 543.4 and Redbridge 539.3
  • Five other boroughs have rates above 400, Enfield (466.2), Waltham Forest (457.1), Bexley (445.9), Newham (432.4) and Tower Hamlets (407.4)
  • Nine other boroughs have rates above 300, Bromley, Merton, Croydon, Sutton, Hackney and the City of London, Greenwich, Kingston, Harrow and Haringey
  • A record 7,422 new cases were announced for December 12, including 35,874 so far in the week leading up to December 14.
  • The other boroughs recording increases of at least 70% are Merton, Redbridge, Hounslow, Croydon, Islington, Havering, Brent, Sutton, Barking and Dagenham and Bexley.
With cases surging in parts of Kent, Essex and some other counties, there is growing speculation that a third lockdown will be imposed in at least a large part of southern England after Christmas.
As epidemics worsen in many countries in Europe, the World Health Organization has called on people to stay home during the holiday season as it “is not worth the risk” of catching the disease .

The organization’s regional director for Europe, Dr Hans Kluge, said: “There is still a difference between what your authorities allow you to do and what you have to do.”

In a statement, he said: “We still have a few months of sacrifice ahead of us and can now behave in ways that we are collectively proud of. When we look back on these unprecedented times, I hope we all felt that we acted with a spirit of shared humanity to protect those in need.

Full figures show that Richmond recorded 423 cases in the week to December 12, up 247 (140.3%) with a rate of 213.6, Lewisham 825 cases, an increase of 435 (111.5%) with a rate of 269.7, Lambeth 882 cases, up from 449 (103.7%) with a rate of 270.5, Hammersmith et Fulham 383 cases, up from 190 (98.4%) with a rate of 206.9, Enfield 1556 cases, up from 756 (94.5%) with a rate of 466.2, Wandsworth 826 cases, up from 396 (92.1%) with a rate of 250.5, Westminster 441 cases, up from 206 (87.7%) with a rate of 168.8, Camden 499 cases, up 233 (87.6%) with a rate of 184.8, Southwark 796 cases, up from 364 (84.3%) with a rate of 249.7, Bromley 1,154 cases, up from 517 (81.2%) with a rate of 347.2, Merton 692 cases, up from 307 (79.7%) with a rate of 335, Redbridge 1,646 cases, up 726 (78.9%) with a rate of 539.3, Hounslow 742 cases, up from 324 (77.5%) with a rate of 273.3, Croydon 1,180 cases, up from 513 (76.9%) with a rate of 305.1, and Islington 573 cases, up 249 (76.9%) with a rate of 236.3.
In Havering, there were 1,697 cases, up from 710 (71.9%) with a rate of 653.8, Brent 864 cases, up from 361 (71.8%) with a rate of 262, Sutton 649 cases, up from 271 (71.7%) with a rate of 314.5, Barking et Dagenham 1,157 cases, up from 479 (70.6%) with a rate of 543.4, Bexley 1,107 cases, up 456 (70%) with a rate of 445.9, Hackney and the City of London 922 cases, up from 375 (68.6%) with a rate of 317, Tower hamlets 1,323 cases, up from 533 (67.5%) with a rate of 407.4, Newham 1,527 cases, up from 586 (62.3%) with a rate of 432.4, Greenwich 891 cases, up from 312 (53.9%) with a rate of 309.4, Kingston 604 cases, up 210 (53.3%) with a rate of 340.3, Herse 832 cases, up from 283 (51.5%) with a rate of 331.3, Kensington et Chelsea 275 cases, up from 93 (51.1%) with a rate of 176.1, Haringey 823 cases, up from 267 (48%) with a rate of 306.3, Waltham Forest 1,266 cases, up from 376 (42.2%) with a rate of 457.1, Barnet 981 cases, up from 283 (40.5%) with a rate of 247.8, Ealing 804 cases, up from 228 (39.6%) with a rate of 235.2, and Hillingdon 804 cases, up 227 (39.3%) with a rate of 262.
