The Knicks launch their new City Edition uniforms on Saturday in their home opener against the Philadelphia 76ers. This is what appears to have led to the malfunction of the evening uniform. Eagle-eyed fans noticed early on that Mitchell Robinson and Reggie Bullock had the same number 23 on the back of their shirts.
This is unusual on several levels. Obviously, only one player per team can wear a given uniform number. These numbers exist to identify players, after all. Robinson is the Knick typically awarded to No. 23. Bullock wears No. 25, and this is where things get tricky: It was still Saturday. Bullock’s jersey had the number 23 on the back and the number 25 on the front. Eventually, officials realized what was going on and forced Bullock out of the game to change shirts.
The Knicks have generally acted as a competent organization in the NBA since hiring Leon Rose as president of basketball operations. Their young players have been looking good so far this season, and the future is brighter in New York than it has been for some time. But apparently no matter how good things are for the team, the Knicks are always going to find a way to Knick.
