Joe Cole turns around on Frank Lampard and insists Chelsea can win Premier League title

Joe Cole wasn’t always convinced Frank Lampard would become a manager – but now he believes he can win the title.

Cole shared a changing room with Lampard during their glory days together at Stamford Bridge and saw him rise from ‘silent leader’ status to Chelsea’s top boss.

Lampard’s men are on a 15-game unbeaten streak, they are third in the Premier League, two points off the top and qualified for the Champions League round of 16 and Cole believes they can win the lot.

Chelsea legend Cole, 39, said: “Looking back I can say that yes of course he was going to be a coach. But at the time, no. You would have said other players.

“Frank did not speak, he set the example and was a silent leader. He spoke but not like some of the others.

“If you had said who would go in first in management, I would have said Didier Drogba, John Terry and Michael Ballack.

“But now you look at all the attributes – intelligence, man management, he’s so eloquent and he ticks all the boxes. I am not at all surprised with his performance.

“Frank won’t thank me for saying that, but they can win anything.

“If you’re an Arsenal, you can’t win the league. Nor Leicester. Chelsea are in the mix of three or four teams that can win the Premier League and five or six that can win the Champions League. ”

“It’s a better team than when they won the Champions League in 2012. Frank has made a better team and it is a great honor for him.

“They look like a team, they have the makings of a great team.

“I can see the Premier League winner coming from Chelsea, Spurs or Liverpool.

“Chelsea have a huge chance. They will be there or around. I can’t say for sure that they will, but in my opinion there are as good as the other two.

“It will be one of those three. ”

Cole believes the real acid test of Lampard’s management was how he was able to make nine changes for the Champions League trip to Sevilla, bring in Olivier Giroud and yet achieve a famous European victory.

And Cole believes Giroud’s form will haunt Arsenal for letting him go.

“Frank is so motivated and focused. Chelsea are a difficult club to manage, they did it the right way, cut their teeth at Derby and didn’t get one foot wrong, ”said Cole.

“Their victory in Seville was brilliant. You’ve had a lot of players, you have to keep them all happy and Frank is clearly doing that. It really is good management.

“Giroud is exceptional. Some of the Arsenal people behind the scenes must be responsible for letting him go. Was it age? But then they signed Willian and David Luiz.

“He’s a brilliant player, it was for Arsenal, it’s now for Chelsea and he’s a pro model, a coach’s dream. ”

Cole has done his coaching badges, wants to be a manager someday in the future but is enjoying family life and working in the media as a BT Sport specialist.

But Cole also works as an ambassador for eToro online trading company which carried out a survey that revealed that three in four football fans disliked football locked out due to other distractions.

Cole believes it is time that before the fans return to the stadiums this weekend, football started to appreciate and cherish fans more in the future.

Cole added, “We’ve learned how important the fans are. You hope this is reflected in the price of the tickets, the experience of the supporters in the stadium but also you are watching the survey and three out of four affecting their enjoyment.

“Football can be a respite, but you have work, the kids and it’s hard to balance everything. ”
