Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen will return to north London in the New Year.
The 33-year-old, who left Spurs on a free transfer last summer, saw his new club Benfica draw Arsenal in the round of 16 of the Europa League.

Benfica have progressed at this point in the competition finishing second to Rangers in Group D but have remained undefeated, taking three wins and drawing three of their six matches.

Vertonghen was ubiquitous in the group stage and opened his account for the Portuguese side with a goal in their 4-0 victory over Lech Poznan on Matchday 5.

Barring injury or loss of form, Vertongthen is expected to be in contention when Benfica host the Gunners on February 18 as well as the second leg at Emirates Stadium a week later.

Given his connection to the Lilywhites, it’s no surprise that there is a huge wave of support in his path.

As soon as the draw was over, Spurs supporters immediately flooded social media, trolling Arsenal and their fans, suggesting Vertonghen was going to be Benfica’s hero and kick them out of the competition.

And the Belgian has apparently delivered his verdict on this possibility.

Spotted by Spurs supporters on Reddit, the defender “liked” two posts on Twitter regarding the round of 16 which takes place in February.

One is the official confirmation of the draw for the Europa League account and the other is a message from @thespursweb.

“Come on @JanVertonghen you know what to do when you come back to North London. ”

Hearing about Vertonghen’s excitement about returning to North London in the New Year, some Spurs fans on Reddit are predicting special things from the defender.
