President-elect Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, said Wednesday that the Delaware attorney’s office has opened an investigation into his “tax matters.”

Hunter Biden, who has long been the target of Donald Trump and his allies, said he learned of the federal investigation on Tuesday from his lawyer, who was briefed on the case by the US attorney’s office earlier today.

“I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective examination of these matters will demonstrate that I have handled my affairs in a legal and proper manner, including with the benefit of professional tax advisers,” said Hunter Biden in a statement released by the president-elect’s transition office.

President Trump and his allies have sought to tarnish his political opponent Joe Biden with unsubstantiated corruption charges involving his son. Trump’s early prosecution of these unsubstantiated allegations resulted in his impeachment, after pressuring the newly elected President of Ukraine to investigate Hunter Biden’s work in the country while his father was deputy. President.

Nonetheless, the president remained obsessed with Hunter Biden throughout the election season, aided by his personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, and his Republican supporters on Capitol Hill. A Senate investigation into allegations led by Trump allies found no evidence of influence or wrongdoing on the part of the former vice president, only concluding that Hunter Biden had exploited his last name to enter into lucrative business deals.

In the final weeks of the campaign, Giuliani claimed a laptop computer that was salvaged from a Delaware repair shop and belonged to Hunter Biden, which allegedly documented his overseas business connections. With Giuliani as the go-between, the allegations were published by the New York Post to support the baseless claim that Biden shaped U.S. foreign policy in Ukraine for the benefit of his son. The Biden campaign has categorically denied the story, and many key details have been disputed.

On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported, according to a person familiar with the matter, that the tax investigation into Hunter Biden “has nothing to do with the laptop”; the Guardian has not confirmed this.

The disclosure of the investigation comes as Joe Biden assembles his cabinet ahead of his inauguration, which will take place on January 20 despite Trump’s refusal to concede the election. Biden has yet to announce his choice for the post of attorney general, a role that could have oversight of his son’s tax investigation.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware is headed by David Weiss, who was appointed by Trump and was sworn in in February 2018. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware declined to comment, citing the ongoing nature of investigation.

Although Hunter Biden’s business relationship and his years of anti-addiction provided Trump with plenty of political ammunition, Biden continued to defend him publicly. Hunter Biden is the president-elect’s only living son, following the death of his eldest, Beau Biden, who died of brain cancer in 2015.

The Biden-Harris Transition Team said in a separate statement: “President-elect Biden is deeply proud of his son, who has battled difficult challenges, including vicious personal attacks in recent months, to come out of it more. strong. “
