Henrik Lundqvist will not join the Washington Capitals this season due to heart disease, he announced Thursday.

“After many weeks of testing and conversations with specialists across the country. It has been determined that heart disease will prevent me from having ice cream. Lundqvist wrote in a statement.

“Together, we have decided that the risk of playing before I can cure my condition is too high. So I will spend the next few months finding the best course of action. ”

The Washington Capitals and the veteran goalie reached a one-year, $ 1.5 million deal on October 3.

“Over the past two months I have been so inspired by the opportunity to play DC and got involved in my game. He wrote: ‘Spending a day at the rink to prepare for the season ahead “.

“The news was very difficult to deal with, but after the last test result earlier this week, we knew there was only one way to go from here. ”

Lundqvist’s stay in New York came to an end after 15 seasons after a buyout on September 30.

He played 887 games during that span, making two all-star teams and winning the Vézina Trophy in 2012. Lundqvist’s career save percentage is 0.918 while his goals against average is 2.43.
