It all started when Kevin McHale, who played Artie, retweeted a fan’s post on “A Very Glee Christmas”:

In the tweet, the face of Mark Salling, who played Puck, is covered by a vomit emoji. In 2017, Mark pleaded guilty to child pornography charges after being found with more than 55,000 images and videos of child pornography – with some of the victims as young as 3 to 5 years old. He died by suicide pending sentencing shortly thereafter.

Heather then responded to Kevin’s retweet, calling the use of the emoji “offensive.”

Although some supported Heather, many people then responded, expressing their disapproval:

@HeatherMorrisTV @druidDUDE I think being a pedophile is a little more offensive than an emoji

@HeatherMorrisTV @druidDUDE i know he was your friend but he was not a good person and you have kids i can’t believe you are serious rn

@HeatherMorrisTV @druidDUDE as a victim of child pornography its really disappointing to see you Heather

Then Heather tweeted about the “disrespect and nastiness” she received:

I don’t feel the need to justify something because it’s better to leave something unsaid. All of you who have a lot to say, I understand, I understand you… there are unforgivable things. But this holiday season, among ALL the holiday seasons, is AMAZING for many of us.

We didn’t just lose 2 cast members, we lost 3. And it’s so amazing having to act like this third one is invisible, because even though his actions are unjustifiable, he was part of our family to at one point and he was mentally SICK. Yes, pedophelia is a disease but …

While I don’t want to have to say all of this, it’s true. So THANK YOU for treating me with such disrespect and meanness for such a period that I cannot go a day without having my eyes fixed on the loss of my entire Glee family… thank you

Which triggered a series of reactions in itself:

@HeatherMorrisTV and thank you for treating the children and families who have been affected with such disrespect. you can have the feelings you want towards her, but don’t expect us to do the same. you just don’t have the right to be offended by people who think her photos are triggers

Some have noted Heather’s tweets in the context of her response to the racism accusations Lea Michele faced by her co-star Samantha Ware earlier this summer:

@HeatherMorrisTV So this family is a bit selective, right? Because when one of her former colleagues needed support when another member of this family mistreated her, hardly anyone stands up for her.

@HeatherMorrisTV shows naya and cory some respect, there is no reason to group them with a PEDOPHILE. and but? but what? he is still a pedophile.

As for Kevin, he didn’t comment further – but liked a tweet that seemed to plead for Mark’s “cancellation”:

@ Jaelynne17 @allison_sorrell @HeatherMorrisTV @druidDUDE I agree that crop cancellation is toxic in most cases, but in this one. there are just certain things in life that you just don’t do. And I hope anyone who feels the need to do that gets the help they need instead / before they do something that will impact lives beyond their own.

We will keep you posted if there are any further updates.
