Blues forward is back in Frank Lampard’s squad but ex-club captain believes he will struggle to maintain his position
Almost leaving Chelsea in January of last year, Giroud was considering leaving Stamford Bridge again until his four-goal spree against Sevilla in the Champions League earlier in December saw him regain his starting spot.
The 34-year-old was increasingly worried about losing his place in the France squad ahead of next summer’s European Championship as he chases Thierry Henry’s scoring record for Les Bleus.
But Desailly, captain of both Chelsea and France, has explained why he believes Giroud ends up in and out of the West London squad.
“He’s not Chelsea’s future and he can never be the main man,” Desailly said Goal , as a member of Nissan UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour.
“It may only be important at times for the club as Lampard can be smart at studying opponents and using him in specific matches against teams that don’t like facing a player with his strengths.
“I believe Lampard has often helped Giroud shine by shooting a lot of him but he can’t be Lampard’s first choice. He has Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner to compete, so he can’t maintain his top pick. status from start to finish.
“It’s just up to Lampard to use him at the right time, to have riders around him to allow him to shine. He’s 34 now so don’t ask him to be the main man but make sure he’s important when he’s needed. With its age and status as a world champion, I think it’s all about how and when you use it. ”
Yet when it comes to his status in France, Giroud is on course to establish himself as a legendary player. Having won the World Cup in 2018 as the main striker, Giroud is now aiming for individual records after winning 105 caps and scoring 44 goals.
Seven more goals are needed to tie Henry’s all-time record, as he also ranks in the top 10 most selected players for his country. French coach Didier Deschamps has kept his confidence in Giroud even in the midst of difficult times for his club and Desailly sees him differently in the Blues jersey.
“It is essential for the national team,” he continued. “Giroud is the perfect teammate and player for the France team. He is the first choice of the national team. [Anthony] Martial does not combine as well in the national team as Giroud.
« [Kylian] Mbappe can play in the middle, but he’s the wide world champion. You have to choose Giroud, who is the second best scorer in the history of France, even if at club level he is intermittently. ”
Desailly has himself been a hero for the France team having won numerous club honors with Marseille, AC Milan and Chelsea during an illustrious career. He excelled in the defense of France and won the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000.
Now the next generation hopes to emulate Desailly and he has chosen his favorite defenders from the impressive pool of talent at Deschamps’ disposal.
“The best combination is probably [Clement] Lenglet and [Rafael] Varane, ”Desailly said of France’s options in the center-half. ” I love [Samuel] Umtiti but he is often injured and it depends on the moment.
” We know [Dayot] Upamecano in Leipzig is amazing. It seems that in the national team he needs to acclimatize to the level, to the different teammates and to the system. He has to get used to the stress of the new level. ”
Desailly has won back-to-back tournaments with France, but also saw his team finish bottom of their group at the 2002 World Cup. He offered his advice to the next generation on what it takes to stay on top of their game. international: “The adrenaline, the stress levels, the ability to maintain one’s intensity make things difficult.
“For us, we did it back to back, but we were almost the same players who failed in 2002. I hope they can manage all of their elements to perform again like we did the first time around. . ”
