Giannis Antetokounmpo “does not focus” on contract before supermax deadline

December 22 is a huge day for the NBA as it kicks off the 2020-21 season, but the night leading up to opening day could bring just as much drama.

December 21 is the deadline for Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo to sign a supermax extension, solidifying his place in Milwaukee for another five years – and earning more than $ 233.45 million in that time.

Antetokounmpo’s contract status is a priority in the league right now… but maybe not for the Greek Freak himself.

“Right now I’m not focused on that,” he said via ESPN’s Malika Andrews. “I’m just trying to focus on myself. ”

Whatever happens, he will play a big role in the NBA market: if he signs the supermax, the teams that want to woo him next offseason (ahem, Raptors) will have to move on to other future plans and the rumor of the world of hoops will. calm down accordingly.

If he doesn’t sign on the dotted line before the 21st? Things are about to get a lot louder. Of course, not signing doesn’t mean Antetokounmpo is as good as gone from Milwaukee – he would still be eligible for the extension, but not for the supermax – but it does heat up just about everything in Milwaukee, from their Leaderboard spot comes from the trade deadline, their ability to win it all and race this season with the game’s biggest young star. (And, if they do, does that mean there is ?)

Antetokounmpo has made it clear that winning is ultimately what he thinks.

“Nobody wants to win a championship more than me,” he said. “But you have to keep improving yourself step by step. ”
