FORMER France star Jerome Rothen has revealed his injury after Zinedine Zidane called him “son of ab ****” in what he calls the “black spot” of his career.
In the 2003-04 season, Monaco ejected Real Madrid from the Champions League in the quarter-finals in a draw.
Madrid’s Galacticos, including Zidane, won the first leg 4-2 at the Bernabeu, then led 1-0 in Monaco.
But the French underdogs launched an incredible comeback to score three times and advance to the semi-finals on away goals, with an overall score of 5-5.
And Rothen, playing for Monaco that April night, revealed his pain after Zidane – his France teammate at the time – tore him apart on the pitch as tensions mounted.
Rothen revealed: “What happened with Zidane is a black spot in my career.
“He said to me ‘get up, son of a bitch.’
“Zidane and I knew each other in the France team.
“I didn’t understand what happened at the time because we had a good relationship.
“We were winning 3-1, we were ready for the semi-finals and Zidane lost the ball.
“It was Real Madrid, the Galaticos, who were eliminated by little Monaco.
“I can understand the frustration, but I didn’t understand those kinds of words.
“He’s someone I knew, with whom I trained and with whom I played in the national team.
“I’m not telling you we were the best friends in the world.
“But I don’t understand the insults with someone who played for the national team. ”
