Disney allegedly failed to pay royalties to “Star Wars” and other franchise novelists belonging to Disney


According to Deadline, The Walt Disney Company does not pay royalties to authors who have written novels for franchises it has acquired. Authors, including legendary Star wars novelist Alan Dean Foster, has not received royalties since Disney bought Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox. We have previously reported Foster’s claim against Disney.
the Deadline article mentions Star wars, Indiana Jones and Buffy the Vampire Slayer novelists, although the names of specific authors are not provided. The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America is leading the charge against Disney.

In a similar story, The Wall Street Journal states that calculating royalties is complicated given the evolution of sales over time.

A Disney statement provided to The Wall Street Journal promises that Disney will look into the claims.

We are carefully reviewing whether any royalty payments may have been missed as a result of the integration of the Acquisition and will take appropriate corrective action if so.

Deadline goes on to say that at least six authors have said they have not received royalty checks since Disney acquired the rights to their work.
