Cyberpunk 2077 is a mess on PS4 and Xbox One

Cyberpunk 2077 launched at midnight last night, and now the console versions are in the wild, we have our first look at the game running on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. First impressions are unfortunately not great.
I played the PS4 version of CD Projekt’s sci-fi epic and can report poor performance including low framerate and pop-in texture when the screen is busy. Even if it isn’t, there is sometimes low-res blur in the visuals. And I encountered several characters locked in a T-pose, frozen in place or stuck in an object. You can still talk to these NPCs, but their mouths don’t move.

Has the PS5 forever changed the way we play single player games?

I had a conversation with Tom Morgan of Digital Foundry, who provided me with some screenshots of Cyberpunk 2077 running on a basic PS4 with some analysis:

According to Morgan, Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 looks very fuzzy, running between 720p and 900p resolution, and the framerate for any driving in major cities is consistently around 20. While some indoor battles do well at 30 fps, they do. can drop to 25 fps. . Framerate drops are one thing, but there are also hiccups – big hiccups in the action where a new object or texture needs to load. It may make it difficult to shoot or drive.

Running the game on PlayStation 5 via backward compatibility improves things to a certain extent – loading is certainly faster and the frame rate is unlocked at 60 fps – but the issues including NPCs posing in T, remain.

It turns out that Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 does not have the “quality mode” available on Xbox Series X. That is, the game on PS5 works by default in “performance mode”. On Xbox Series X, you can switch between the two. Quality mode shoots for high resolution, something approaching 4K and 30fps, while performance mode aims for a smooth experience. It’s worth noting that the Xbox Series S also doesn’t have this mode switch.

Scientific analysis from Digital Foundry is of course coming in, but what is clear at this early stage is that there is a significant divide between the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 and the console versions.

And even a few hours after release, the Cyberpunk 2077 console memes began.

Obviously, CD Projekt has a lot of work to do to update the console version of Cyberpunk 2077. In a tweet, the developer said, “The journey has only just begun and we are working hard on fixes and updates. coming day of the game. ”

Meanwhile, playing Cyberpunk 2077 on PC with a robust platform seems like the best option – for now.
