Chevy Chase is returning to Saturday Night Live and her Clark Griswold character simultaneously, courtesy of Ford. Kind of.
The actor stars in a “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” themed commercial for the electric Ford Mustang Mach-E with his on-screen wife Beverly D’Angelo which will take place during prime time on the “Saturday Night Live Christmas” Special ”in December 22.
The spot is already on YouTube, however, and reimagines the famous scene from the film where Griswold lights up his house with a blinding array of Christmas lights after his wife, Ellen, flips the power switch.
The twist this time is that she turns on the juice to load up a Mustang Mach-E, which catches more family attention than the illuminated display.
Griswold’s stepfather calls him a “pretty whip” as they gather around him and then says he had a Mustang “back in the days when cars made noises”.
While the Mach-E is much quieter than a Mustang coupe, it hums at speeds below 20 mph to alert pedestrians to its presence and can fill the cabin with a digital recreation of an engine. V8.

Chase, an SNL legend, last appeared on the program during his 40th anniversary special in 2015 and is reportedly banned from hosting him due to questionable behavior on set in the past. The 77-year-old criticized the show’s recent form in a 2018 Washington Post interview, calling it “the world’s worst humor f – g”, but the ad was produced by the SNL producer Broadway Video, so the holiday spirit seems alive and well.
