Barnsley 0-4 Bournemouth: Dominic Solanke among goals as Cherries lead

Dominic Solanke has scored his sixth league goal of the season

Bournemouth rose to the top of the league as two goals in each half beat them mercilessly at Barnsley.

In an open game with several chances at both ends, the Cherries led when Philip Billing found the bottom corner with a low 20-yard strike.

The hosts should have leveled, but defender Mads Andersen couldn’t adjust his feet in time to deflect Michal Helik’s effort by two meters, and was punished when Dominic Solanke doubled Bournemouth’s lead with a run and a finish close to the post on a half stroke. -time.

Diego Rico went 3-0 with a beautiful free kick that caught up with Barnsley goalkeeper Jack Walton – who was expecting a cross – with Sam Surridge capitalizing on a mistake to complete the scoring with a shot Walton should have prevented.

The victory puts Jason Tindall’s side two points ahead of Norwich, who will regain first place by beating Sheffield on Wednesday Saturday.

Barnsley, meanwhile, drop a spot to 15th as their goal difference took a dent at Oakwell against a Bournemouth side displaying the clinical advantage they lacked in the Premier League last season.

The cherries – beaten at home by Preston Tuesday – should have led in the opening minutes, but Surridge shot wide with an open goal, albeit from an angle, after beating Walton squeezed to a ball into the channel.

Alex Mowatt forced Asmir Begovic to make a decent save from a distance as the Tykes carried a threat, but they gave Danish midfielder Billing too much room to pick his place in the opener after Adam Smith carried the ball forward for the visitors.

In many ways Valerien Ismael’s Barnsley was the architects of their own downfall – striker Cauley Woodrow gave the ball into his own half for Solanke’s second well taken, Andersen conceded an unnecessary free kick that led to the third from Bournemouth and Herbie Kane inexplicably played Surridge. with a capricious pass that was also duly punished.

A snapshot of Woodrow was dismissed by Begovic and Luke Thomas curled up as the home side threatened from outside the box in the second half, but Bournemouth – now the league’s top scorer with 29 goals alongside Blackburn – retained his first clean sheet away from home since his 1-0 win at Chelsea in December 2019.
