Arsenal have been warned they are ‘in free fall’ under Mikel Arteta ahead of their crucial Boxing Day showdown with Chelsea.
The Gunners head into the London derby after winning just once in their last 10 Premier League games, and following Wednesday’s 4-1 loss to Man City in the League Cup.

Arteta’s position is now under close scrutiny, with the sacking of PSG manager Thomas Tuchel now leading fans’ calls for the Spaniard to be replaced at the helm.

It looks like the Arsenal boss is also fighting with a serious dose of behind-the-scenes player power, as the recent exchange between Matteo Guendouzi and Mesut Ozil on social media seemed to suggest.

And former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has now questioned Arteta’s erratic decision-making.

“Looks like these are decisions at key times again,” Keown said. talkSPORT . “Partey is only back a few days of training and now we’ve been without him for a couple of months.

“I think the base of support around the manager should really help him in every decision.

“I was screaming on TV the other night. Martinelli – a very good player, a very good talent – he was injured five minutes before half-time.

“It comes back and it lasts about two minutes. Make the right decisions!

“And the people around him need to help him make the right decisions when he is under pressure and currently under enormous pressure.

“Arsenal are going to have to find a way to win games and they are going to have to choose players they can count on. ”

Arteta was unable to build on the FA Cup victory in August after beating Saturday opponent Chelsea in the final.

Indeed, this piece of silver sets him apart from his counterpart in the canoe, Frank Lampard, who has not yet won a trophy with his team.

It’s clear that the two managers have completely different tasks ahead of them, however, with Chelsea’s significant investment pushing them towards title contention, while Arsenal appear to be more of a long-term project.

Arsenal’s board has backed Arteta in the transfer market, but a number of his signings are already in question.

In particular, the acquisition of Willian on a free transfer from Chelsea is at the top of these, the Brazilian not having impressed since arriving at the Emirates.

With the Gunners’ backs against the wall and the pressure on Arteta growing, he apparently has no room for maneuver left, with Tuchel’s new availability only adding to the turmoil of Arsenal’s fan base.

And Keown told Arteta he couldn’t afford to make more bad turns.

“People ask [Emile] Smith-Rowe and all these other young players, but you can’t just throw them in this situation, ”he added.

“You really can’t go wrong from here on out.

“The transfer window is approaching and you can’t go wrong. [Nicolas] Pepe walks around, doesn’t seem interested, Willian is on vacation. You have to choose players that you can rely on, the senior players, and then tie young children to that.

“At the moment, the club feels like it is in free fall. ”
