Meredith and DeLuca got together Grey’s Anatomy Season 15. As with most couples, MerLuca has progressed in their relationship. And finally, Meredith realized she was in love with DeLuca.

With that said, DeLuca has struggled with his sanity throughout Grey’s Anatomy Season 16. Then, at one point, Meredith called her boyfriend for risking the life of a patient, noting that he was starting to look like his father. So DeLuca broke up with Meredith.

Even so, Meredith was by DeLuca’s side. After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, DeLuca spoke with his family and colleagues, including Meredith. They asked him for treatment – and he did. Now DeLuca is starting to learn how to deal with her bipolar diagnosis.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight from December 2020, Gianniotti acknowledged the challenges DeLuca and Meredith face Grey’s Anatomy Season 17. Following DeLuca’s bipolar diagnosis, the relationship was put on hold. But now that DeLuca is working on his sanity, Gianniotti has revealed that his character is ready to rekindle MerLuca’s romance.

“There’s definitely a romance between DeLuca and Meredith that’s at stake,” Gianniotti said, noting his character’s progress with medication, sleep, and therapy. “Now that he’s a bit on the mend, I think maybe he was starting to reopen the possibility of picking up where he left off with Meredith.”

Nonetheless, Meredith contracted the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17. She is currently fighting for her life. DeLuca is also on his case alongside Teddy Altman (Kim Raver). And finally, DeLuca just wants to save Meredith.

“Before he even has a chance to break this conversation with her, she gets COVID. Of course, his life is the most important thing, ”said Gianniotti. “Any kind of personal emotional baggage is put on hold for both Meredith and DeLuca. Right now, he’s just concerned with saving this woman he loves and who is at least a best friend.

The actor continued, “He’s his primary health care provider alongside Teddy, and they’ve formed this team to take care of Meredith. Everything that is emotional right now is put on hold because saving your life is the most important thing. All of this will have to wait.

But if Meredith is successful, does DeLuca stand a chance? Recently, Richard Flood – who plays DeLuca’s rival Cormac “McWidow” Hayes – was cast as a regular on the show. Nevertheless, Gianniotti still believes in a Meredith and DeLuca endgame on Grey’s Anatomy.

“There are a lot of obstacles on the way right now. But that doesn’t mean it could pave the way in the future for them to be late in the game, ”Gianniotti told Access in November. “I’m sure DeLuca hopes so. And so, I believe that with him.
