Deadline targets: Oil companies have apparently shown interest in Leafs’ Kapanen, Johnsson and Kerfoot
Written by Cam Lewis and posted Jan. 17 as part of his Deadline Goal series, Cam wrote about how Darren Dreger linked the two organizations over insider trading.
Dreger: The Battle of Alberta could also drift off the ice because the Edmonton Oilers are also looking for a top six forward. [It was mentioned earlier how the Flames are seeking a top-six right winger.]
I’m not sure about the Flames, but I think the Edmonton Oilers are going to be very attentive to what’s going on with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Again, there is speculation around [Kasperi] Kapanen, [Andreas] Johnsson, and possibly Alex Kerfoot.
While an exchange was never made between the two surrounding one of these players, it was a hint of what might yet happen. The Oilers and Leafs and have been linked for what seems like an eternity in the trading market. Supposed discussions have always seemed to surround these teams and more specifically players like Kapanen, Johnsson and even a guy like William Nylander to some extent.
Kapanen was distributed to the Pittsburgh Penguins as the playoffs continued, and in October the Leafs sent Johnsson to the New Jersey Devils.
Will there ever be a real exchange between the two teams? Who the hell knows.
