PARIS (AP) – Many countries defend freedom of expression and allow publications that scandalize the Prophet of Islam, especially the nations of the democratic West. But France is the target of demonstrations and calls for boycott across the Muslim world, it is also often the target of deadly violence on the part of extremist margins. France’s brutal colonial past, steadfast secular policies, and the harsh-speaking president who is seen as insensitive to the Muslim faith all play a role in raising negative awareness. The European country is now stepping up security and mourning three people who killed in a knife attack on a church, the latest of many deadly attacks attributed to Islamic extremists in recent years.
