Trump will welcome Michigan lawmakers as he makes dubious efforts to cancel the election

President Donald Trump to meet with Republican leaders in the Michigan State Legislature on Friday at the White House, as his campaign continues an increasingly desperate attempt to overturn the Nov. 3 election amid a series of courtroom losses.

Meanwhile, President-elect Joe Biden to meet Democratic leaders in Congress, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer after spending most of the week huddled with advisers as he plans his administration.

The latest strategy of the Trump campaign, described by three people familiar with the plan, is to convincing Republican-controlled legislatures in battlefield states Biden won, such as Michigan and Pennsylvania, to undermine election results and deliver those statements to the Republican President’s corner.

Trump’s attempts to reverse the outcome via lawsuits and recounts met with little success. A manual count of Georgia’s roughly 5 million votes ended Thursday, confirming Biden’s victory there, as judges in three states rejected offers by the campaign to challenge the vote count.

Former Democratic Vice President Biden won 306 votes to Trump’s 232 in state-by-state electoral college who determines the winner. Each state’s electoral votes, which are largely based on population, are usually awarded to the winner of the state’s popular vote, which is cast in December in what is usually a formality.

Senior Trump campaign official said idea was to cast doubt on results in some states while urging Republican lawmakers to step in by appointing their own pro-Trump voters.

Lawyers have sounded the alarm at a sitting president seeking to undermine the will of voters, although they expressed skepticism that a state legislature could legally replace its own voters.
