Steve Bruce confirms details of COVID outbreak at NUFC

Steve Bruce has played down discussions of the unrest behind the scenes following Allan Saint-Maximin’s withdrawal from the squad that beat Crystal Palace. The Magpies triumphed without the French winger amid suggestions he was on the verge of being abandoned.

Asked about the situation at Saint-Maximin, Bruce confirmed he had a calf injury, but said, “I just want to talk about the performance they put in.

“It was sometimes not great, but you can’t fault their efforts, their efforts.

“There was a resilience in them that I was absolutely delighted with.

“It’s been a tough week, but the guys reacted the right way.

In the absence of Saint-Maximin, Bruce said: “Unfortunately, Allan injured his calf. He complained about it before training, then afterwards he wasn’t right. With Jamaal Lascelles, Isaac Hayden and Emil Krafth all missing, Bruce was asked about the Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

He said: “We have three confirmed players and, unfortunately, a member of my staff. So, of course, it’s a concern and difficult to deal with.

“We’re doing our best to be as safe as possible.

“My concern is not only the well-being of the players, which is of vital importance, it is also the members of my staff.

“We’ll do our best, but it’s difficult at the moment.”
