As is common knowledge we will disclose: Ms. Loren is now 86 years old. “Everyone gets older – I mean, me too! I am not a saint! Me too. What can I do? Should I be afraid? Why “It’s wonderful. And I’m gorgeous for my age anyway, don’t you think? ”
“Oh, absolutely agree! Doane replied.
« Things are going well. »
Throughout her career, she played decidedly unglamorous roles. His latest, Madame Rosa, is a former prostitute who takes care of the children of other sex workers.
She lives on the fringes of Italian society, just as Loren grew up in poverty with a single single mother in a suburb of Naples.
“That’s why I made the movie – she reminded me a lot of my mom,” Loren said. “My mother was absolutely like that. Inside she was very fragile, but she looked strong.
The family ties do not end there. The director of the film is Edoardo Ponti, his son.
So who is the boss on set? “He’s pretending he’s not, but he’s the boss,” Loren said.
Edoardo is the younger of two sons Loren had with her late husband Carlo Ponti, the film producer who first discovered her as a teenager (then named Sofia Villani SciColone) during a beauty pageant. in Rome. This is the third time that mother and son have teamed up.
Doane asked Ponti, “Did you always think of your mother for this role? ”
Loren intervened, “I wish he had!” ”
Ponti said, “I don’t think anyone could have inhaled the role of Madame Rosa’s character like she did. ”
“It’s quite a resource to have in the family,” Doane said.
“If my mom happened to be such an amazing actress and I was a director, I would be a idiot if that didn’t cast my mom in my movies, ”Ponti said.
The story tells of the unlikely friendship between a Holocaust survivor and a 12-year-old Muslim immigrant from Senegal, Momo, played by Ibrahima Gueye. This is his first role as an actor. Loren said: “He was really like someone who has always been in this business. I think he was born for it. I think so. ”
No small compliment from Loren, who has performed opposite some of Hollywood’s biggest stars: Clark Gable, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando and Cary Grant.
Doane asked Ponti, “Did you hesitate to put this completely untested actor next to your mom in those lead roles? ”
“Thank goodness I didn’t! ” he has answered. “To make sure he felt comfortable with my mom, we all lived together under one roof during the shoot, so he could see her as I see her. ”
Doane said, “So, Ibrahima would get up in the morning, and Sophia Loren would be in the kitchen saying, before shooting, ‘I’ll make you breakfast’? ”
“Correct, correct,” Ponti said. “Because that was the only way to make the right bond so they knew each other. ”
It was a way for the young actor to see Loren as an Italian mom, not like a movie star. “Sunday Morning” also saw this. If coronavirus precautions hadn’t kept our interview virtual, Loren, at her home in Switzerland, said she would have welcomed us and cooked pasta. “Next time we do it! ” she says.
Loren was the first to win the Oscar for Best Actress in a Foreign Language Film, “Two Women” from 1961. For decades she has wowed audiences with her talent, but her beauty has been put to great use. .
Doane asked, “For someone who has been such a beauty icon, how has your definition of beauty changed? Or, does she have it? ”
“It doesn’t matter the appearance,” Loren said. “Maybe it’s important in the movies. But this is what you have to give within yourself, your soul, your everything. The way you believe in things, the way your family is. The way you are with your friends. . It’s a good life. ”
Loren had taken an almost ten-year hiatus from comedy to spend time with his family, until the good part, with the right director, came along.
Doane asked, “How is it working with your son? ”
“No, not good. Not good. Not good at all. Very bad, very bad! ” she says. “Because he knows me so well, he always knows how to push the right button so I can react and do whatever he thinks I should be done. ”
Ponti said: “My mother approaches each film as if it were the first. And part of his process is, “Oh, my God, I can’t. And part of my process is, “No, no, no. Of course you can. “”
“Are you serious? Does she really doubt herself? Doane asked.
” Every day. Every take. Every moment. And it’s beautiful, because she always approaches it with the same anxiety, the same spontaneity, the same passion as if it were her first film. ”
Doane asked Loren if she was okay with her son. “Yes, yes, yes, I know myself that he is right, he knows me. “
Their film is already generating Oscar buzz, and they are passionate about its messages of tolerance and the value of non-traditional families. “If this movie can give an audience the desire to love others and live their life to the fullest, then anything is possible,” Loren said.
“It has to be something to really be able to come together and create a creative product with someone you love, and then you take it to the world? Said Doane
” Certainly. Absolutely, ”Loren replied.
Ponti added: “It’s good for my soul. ”
How? ‘Or’ What? “Because it aligns everything I love: my job, my mom, storytelling. It aligns everything. ”
Loren kissed him: ” Owl. Owl. I have a good son! ”
“And I have a good mother! Says Ponti.
” I will say. It’s certain! ” she laughed
