Soapbox: Demon’s Souls difficulty shouldn’t stop you from playing the best PS5 game

I’m pretty average at games. Painfully average. Whenever there is a ranking, I rarely find myself at the top; I rarely find myself at the bottom either. I am always in the middle. If it’s an online shooter, I’ll never be the MVP, but I’ll find a way to contribute to my team. In cooperative games, I often find myself following the lead of superior players – eager to help but afraid of making a mistake. Heck, even when playing single player campaigns I usually set the difficulty to Normal. It seems fair to me.

Demon’s Souls is obviously one of the most popular games in the PlayStation 5 launch lineup, and I know a lot of people are scared. I totally understand. The talk around this game can be terrifying; you need to “git gud” or go home, and that can be confusing. Heck, even the marketing campaigns for later titles like Dark Souls put the fear of God in average gamers like you and me: Prepare to die. But what if I don’t want to die? It doesn’t sound like a particularly fun way to relax, does it?

My advice: don’t be discouraged! I won’t lie to you, Demon’s Souls is a tough game – but it’s not that hard that you can’t enjoy it. Listen, if is can progress in this game and have a lot of fun, so can you. Honestly, I find the discussion around FromSoftware titles to be misleading: it turns people off, and frankly, the experience is not as difficult as you would think. It just takes a different mindset; invest and you will be richly rewarded. In this particular example, it is the best PS5 game.

Here are my tips for enjoying Demon’s Souls even if you are an average gamer like me:

  • The first thing I recommend you do is read the resources available to you. Demon’s Souls is over a decade old now, and many of its ambiguous secrets have been widely revealed by fans. There is nothing to be afraid of anymore, just take some time to digest the information and use it to influence your decisions in the game. Demon Souls Guide is a really great place to start.
  • Take the game slowly, too. This is not the type of title you can just browse; this is the recipe for disaster. If you savor it, however, examine every nook and cranny, you’ll find yourself making slow and steady progress. The moment you start to rush is the moment you hit a wall.
  • Don’t be afraid to play co-op. Summoning other players into your game is a big part of the Demon’s Souls experience, and you’ll find that a lot of fans are really eager to help you out and show you the ropes. Not everyone is very friendly, of course, but you’d be surprised how welcoming the community is to show you secrets and help you beat the bosses. It’s part of the game, so enjoy it.
  • Above all, relax. Everyone has lost their soul and everyone has hit the brick walls. The game may lack direction from more modern versions, but there’s nothing stopping you from setting your own goals. If your weapon no longer cuts it, find one that matches your build and plan a way to acquire it. Do you need to cultivate resources? Then find where to find them and go for it; Spend some time stocking up and leveling up in the process. There is always something you could do, so don’t worry if you get stuck – instead put your time in a different aspect of the title, and come back when you’re ready.

I absolutely love Demon’s Souls right now, and I think if you’ve been put off by the discussion surrounding it, you definitely could too! There is really nothing in this game that is so impenetrable that an average player cannot overcome it; you just have to have the right mindset. Don’t miss out on the best PS5 game because you think you won’t be able to progress in it; you may end up surprising yourself!
