The Surrey School District announced COVID-19 exposures at seven different schools on Friday, bringing the total to 40 schools with active exposure.

The Surrey School District confirmed that people with COVID-19 were attending Simon Cunningham Elementary, Riverdale Elementary, Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, Hyland Elementary, Sunrise Ridge Elementary, Sunnyside Elementary and Queen Elizabeth Secondary School on Friday.

In a letter sent to parents, the school district said public health was tracking exposures. Receiving a letter does not mean a parent’s child has been exposed to COVID-19, according to the advisory.

“The cases were isolated, and there is no risk of direct exposure at the time,” the letter said.

“As we share our daily list, our thoughts are with the staff and community of Cambridge (elementary) – spending this weekend in seclusion. Also a reminder of the importance of the field staff, TTOC, Spareboard, in the overall 54 additional employees affected, ”school district superintendent Jordan Tinney tweeted on Saturday.

Cambridge Elementary was completely closed, as of November 14, for two weeks after the identification of seven positive cases for COVID-19.

“As a precautionary measure to respond to this outbreak, Fraser Health advised the Surrey School District to close Cambridge Primary School for a period of two weeks in order to break any chain of COVID-19 transmission that may be present in school, ”according to a press release from Fraser Health on Nov. 14.

Earlier this month, Tinney shared a note sent to parents informing that Cambridge Elementary will close until November 30.

“We recognize that this has been a stressful time as you await further information, and we appreciate that this closure will cause disruption and inconvenience for many,” the message to parents read. “The safety of our school community is of the utmost importance and we value your patients and your understanding.”

Despite a provincial mandate for masks in all indoor and commercial public spaces, schools are exempt.

In his COVID-19 briefing Thursday (November 19). Provincial health officer Dr Bonnie Henry said schools are “not open public spaces”. However, masks are mandatory in high traffic areas of middle and high schools.

“We don’t expect children to wear masks sitting at their desks all day,” she said.

Older students in Ontario and some schools in Quebec are required to wear masks when in their classrooms.
