According to Heavy.com’s Sean Deveney, the Lakers are interested in targeting former Toronto Raptors champion Serge Ibaka.
“One target is Raptors big man Serge Ibaka, according to league officials,” Deveney reported.
Ibaka, 31, has just won the best scoring campaign of his career. During the 2019-2020 season, the great man averaged 15.4 points, 8.2 tables and 1.4 assists per game.
In addition, he had 14.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per fight during the 2020 NBA Playoffs.
It makes perfect sense for the Lakers to pursue the veteran, according to Deveney.
“From a staff perspective, he’s exactly the kind of great type of combo that the team (the Lakers) need,” an NBA general manager told Heavy.com. “They were interested in him before and they will do it again. When in good health, he’s a great starter in 5 (center) and 4 (power forward). He’s as good a bench big as there is in the league. He was a really believable 3-point threat last year. If he’s willing to take what the Lakers can afford to give him, I know they would.
Of course, the Lakers have secured the 2020 championship with their current squad. They beat the Miami Heat, which ironically also shows interest in Ibaka, among other teams.
“The Raptors are always the favorites to keep Ibaka. But if he leaves, he would only do so to have a chance at a championship – teams like the [Boston] Celtics, the [Los Angeles] Clippers, heat, [Dallas] Mavericks and the [Portland] The Trail Blazers are among those interested in Ibaka. The Lakers, however, would give him the best chance in another ring.
The Lakers have crossed the Western Conference, eliminating all of their enemies in just five games.
Other teams are expected to improve their rosters. As a result, the Lakers need to stay cool and improve on all sides of the floor.
