A brief statement from the Spanish Football Association said the defender suffered “from severe discomfort in the right tendon”.

Varane was substituted at half-time in France’s 4-2 win over Sweden in Paris, apparently also with a hamstring problem.

“I had to remove Raphael because he had a little problem,” Blues said coach Didier Deschamps.

The extent of Ramos’ injury will be assessed on Wednesday, when the 34-year-old undergoes further testing, but Spain manager Luis Enrique has said he sympathizes when clubs see their star players fall during international duties.

« [Ramos and Sergio Canales] These are muscle injuries, you don’t think they are too serious, although it is annoying for clubs when a player gets injured with the national team, I know what it is. We hope they won’t be away for too long, ”the former Barcelona manager said after the game.

The Spanish medical team wants to see how the injury evolves overnight before making a definitive diagnosis.

Ramos – who on Saturday became the most capped European player of all time, breaking the record for Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon – was in his 178th international.

The Real Madrid and Spain captain now looks certain to miss his club’s La Liga fixture against Villarreal on Saturday. Ramos would then face a race to be fit for a crucial Champions League clash at Internazionale next Wednesday.

Apart from Ramos and Varane, Madrid are also currently without third-choice center-back Eder Militao, who tested positive for the coronavirus on November 2.

If the absence of the three is confirmed, it would leave Nacho Fernandez – barely recovering from injury himself – as the club’s only available senior center-back this weekend.
