Rapper King Von died early Friday after a shooting outside a nightclub in Atlanta, Georgia, in which police were involved, authorities said. The Atlanta Police Department said it did not believe the rapper, whose legal name is Dayvon Daquan Bennett, was shot by police, but rather in a shootout before police intervened.

“At this time, our investigators believe that Mr. Bennett was shot dead in the initial shooting between the two groups of men, before the police responded and tried to stop the shooting,” authorities said in a statement. .

Police said two groups of men outside the Monaco Hookah Lounge started arguing around 3:20 a.m. Two police officers on leave, who were working “extra work” in Monaco, were outside the show. “The officers were in uniform and a [Atlanta police department] the vehicle with its blue lights activated for visibility was parked nearby, ”authorities said.

The dispute “quickly turned into gunfire between these two groups,” police said.

One of the two off-duty officers, as well as a duty officer who worked near the lounge, “confronted” the alleged shooters. Police said “shots were fired during the encounter”.

Bennett was taken to hospital in a private vehicle, police said. A total of three people, including Bennett, are believed to have died.

Bennett, 26, is from Chicago and was set to have a pivotal year. His first mixtape, Grandson, Vol 1, was released in September 2019, according to Pitchfork. In March, Bennett released his second mixtape, Levon James, which reached No. 81 on Rolling Stone’s Top 200 Albums chart, the magazine reported. Bennett amassed around 575 million feeds, according to the magazine.

Artists, including Chance The Rapper, have expressed their grief over Bennett’s death.

” Sensational. This year has been so difficult. rip von God bless him and his family, I can’t believe it ”, he tweeted Friday afternoon.

The Georgian Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was tasked with investigating the agents’ involvement in this incident.

Six men were shot dead during the initial altercation and the officers’ subsequent involvement. The three men who did not die from gunshot wounds were hospitalized, the GBI said. The officers were not injured.

“The GBI will continue its independent investigation,” the office said in a statement. “Once the investigation is complete, it will be referred to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review. ”

Atlanta Police are also reviewing the deaths. “Part of the investigations will include determining which individuals were affected by the shots of the suspects and whether any were affected by the shots by the officers,” police said.

Attempts to reach Bennett’s representatives were not immediately successful.

Ghazi Shami, who is believed to have founded Bennett’s record company, wrote on Instagram: “My heart is heavy. Another young rising star has left too soon. I pray for your family, little brother.

He added: “We have to find a better way. There is too much senseless violence. It must stop. May God help us. #RipKingVon. “
