Ken Lennox has opened up about the incident some 35 years after it happened, after placing a bet of £ 50 at the time (worth £ 161 in today’s money) on the outside from St Mary’s Hospital in London, where he was waiting to take pictures of the couple. and their newborn son.
Ken bet it couldn’t be true that Prince Charles “ditched” Diana after the birth, but it turned out he lost his bet.
In the documentary, Ken says, “I’m standing outside the hospital and Jimmy Gray who was a Royal Daily Mail photographer at the time.
“He said to me ‘Do you know he [Prince Charles] gonna get out of here and go play polo?
Ken couldn’t believe this would be true and was therefore happy to take the £ 50 bet on whether or not Prince Charles made his way to the polo field.
He was devastated about an hour later when the Prince of Wales left Diana in hospital so he could get in the saddle to play his favorite sport.
Ken recalls: “I lost £ 50 because I couldn’t believe a man with a newborn baby was going to play a silly game of Polo.
“Doing something like that to a woman with a newborn baby was excruciating.
“If he thought he could treat his wife like that, he was in big trouble.
Andrew Morton, who was Diana’s biographer, said Prince Harry’s birth was a ‘symbolic moment’ for the People’s Princess.
He said that was when the “shutters closed” on Diana’s marriage to Charles.
He told ITV: “You can almost date the end of the marriage around this time. ”
* Diana’s Interview: Revenge Of A Princess airs tonight at 9 p.m. on ITV.
