M&S has announced that it is keeping stores open until midnight as Christmas approaches.
From December 21 to 23, 400 M&S stores will offer the new opening hours – the longest the supermarket has ever offered during the holiday season.
Aldi is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Friday as the big day approaches on December 25.
Waitrose said some of its convenience stores and supermarkets will be operating on an extended basis from December 21 to 23, until 11 p.m. and 10 p.m. respectively.
Cambridge’s Waitrose supermarket on Fitzroy Street near the Grafton Center is among those that will stay open until 10 p.m.
Sainsbury’s said the majority of its supermarkets are now open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Coldham’s Lane Sainsbury’s is open during these hours, but other stores in Cambridge are open from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., including Eddington stores and Trumpington.
The longest-running local Tesco store is Bar Hill, which operates 24 hours a day. Milton supermarket is open from 6 a.m. to midnight and the Cambridge Newmarket Road store is open from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
In other retail news, Primark says it will be open longer when non-essential retail stores are allowed to reopen after the lockdown ends on December 2.
A Primark spokesperson said: “Associated British Foods Plc is asking for extended hours of operation for Primark stores once they reopen in December. ”
Sacha Berendji, Director of Retail, Operations and Real Estate at M&S, said: “We want our customers to be able to shop with confidence this Christmas, which means supporting social distancing in our stores and line up outside as the weather cools.
“To help you, we will be opening our longest hours of operation just before Christmas.
“Along with the industry in general, we continue to ask that Sunday trading hours be extended to help us increase our ability to serve everyone safely this festive season. ”
Cambridge’s Sidney Street M&S currently only posts opening hours until December 7 and after Christmas Eve when the doors close at 6 p.m.
