An FIR has been registered against Urdu poet Munawwar Rana for allegedly defending recent killings in France for a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad, police said on Monday.

The case was brought against Rana at Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 153A (promotion of enmity between different groups on religious grounds and acts detrimental to the maintenance of harmony) , 295A (willful and intentional malicious acts scandalize religious sentiments), said an officer.

The poet was also listed under section 505 of the IPC (statements leading to public mischief) and section 66 of the Information Technology Act, the officer said.

In an alleged video clip of an interview with a news channel that has gone viral on social media, Rana can be heard saying, “If someone makes such a bad caricature of my father or my mother, then I kill him. ” When specifically asked if he supported the whole incident, he said, “I’m going to kill him …” Rana’s comments came after three people were killed in a knife attack at a church in Nice. last week. A few weeks ago, an assailant beheaded a French schoolteacher who was showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad for a course on freedom of expression.

Police filed the FIR upon hearing of the interview and an investigation is underway, the officer said.
