The head was found in the Great Mosque in the city of Compiègne in the Oise, where restoration work is underway, the Turkish-Muslim group DITIB in Compiègne said on Monday in a statement.
Condemning the incident, the mosque management filed a complaint.
The French Council for Muslim Worship also denounced the incident and expressed its solidarity with the leadership of the mosque and the community.
The development comes amid rising anti-Islam rhetoric in France following controversial statements by President Emmanuel Macron.
Claiming that Islam is a “religion in crisis,” he defended the blasphemous caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, leading to international condemnations, protests and calls to boycott French-made goods.
