Ontario Premier Doug Ford to make an announcement Thursday afternoon


TORONTO – Ontario Premier Doug Ford will make an announcement Thursday afternoon a day after confirming his government will reveal more health measures to stop the spread of COVID-19. The Premier will be joined to Queen’s Park by Minister of Labor, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton and Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams.

A day earlier, Ford said his government had asked Williams for further recommendations and expected the measures “to be discussed in cabinet and announced in the coming days.”

The prime minister hinted that the announcement would come on Friday and should target only COVID-19 hot spots.

The government will also add more health experts to its bi-weekly COVID-19 updates at 3 p.m.

Dr. Dirk Huyer, Provincial Outbreak Response Coordinator, will join Williams and / or the Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Barbara Yaffe, every Thursday for the briefing. Adalsteinn (Steini) Brown, dean of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto and co-chair of the Ontario COVID-19 Scientific Advisory Table, will join the press conference every other Thursday.

The government has been criticized for not being fully transparent about the advice it receives from health officials.
