It was hard to blame the Notre Dame students for their enthusiasm over the Irish No.4’s 47-40 double-overtime victory over No.1 Clemson on Saturday. After all, it was the program’s first victory over a top contender since 1993, several years before most of Notre Dame’s undergraduates were born.

But the collective decision of what appeared to be mostly young Notre-Dame fans to rush onto the pitch at the Notre-Dame stadium in the wake of Saturday’s victory immediately drew the world’s wrath, as many of a crowd The announced 11,011 people spread from the stands to celebrate the victory.

Moments after the Notre Dame defense stopped Clemson on the fourth try of second overtime, fans started rushing onto the pitch. Soon after, he became a tight mass of fans mingling with players in celebration as the Fighting Irish took revenge for a 2018 college football playoff semi-final loss to the Tigers.

Notre Dame has adopted an attendance policy in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that limits stadium capacity to 20% or less, with priority given to students, “ensuring that every student who wishes to attend games will be able to do so” . The policy requires all participants to wear masks “and practice physical distancing”.

That last part was certainly dropped on Saturday night, although it isn’t the first time COVID-19 has cast a veil on an otherwise festive moment in major American sports. Los Angels Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner has come under heavy criticism for choosing to take photos on the field with his teammates after the Dodgers won the World Series last month. Turner had learned during the deciding playoff game that he tested positive for the coronavirus.

One major difference in the two situations is that the Dodgers season was over when Turner potentially exposed his teammates to the virus. The Fighting Irish are scheduled to play at Boston College next week.
