Matic reveals what Fernandes said about the sentence
Nemanja Matic has revealed that Bruno Fernandes immediately told him he got the ball after a challenge with West Brom’s Conor Gallagher.
Referee David Coote initially awarded the Manchester United player a penalty in the second half of their fierce fight with the Baggies, to overturn his decision after reviewing the incident on the pitch monitor.
The decision sparked controversy, with United going on to award a penalty for a handball from Darnell Furlong, who was converted by Fernandes to take him to 1-0, after a recovery.
It was enough for United to earn all three points, as Matic spoke to MUTV after the game about the penalty incidents:
“Bruno said straight away that he had the ball at the start. The referee gave the penalty but VAR is there to see and make the right decisions. That’s why people did VAR, to reduce mistakes and make the right decisions.
“I think it wasn’t a penalty and I’m happy he knocked down.
“It’s not easy to shoot the first and get the goalie off the line, and shoot the second. I’m glad he (Fernandes) had the focus.
