Lidl’s Christmas commercial takes a savage hit on his rival Aldi’s Kevin the carrot


The Christmas ad battle has finally arrived and this year even Lidl is pulling some entertaining punches.The budget supermarket chain has finally released its Christmas ad to rival that of heavyweights such as John Lewis, Coca Cola and McDonalds.

Unlike other heartwarming clips this year, Lidl tried to put a comedic twist on their animated commercial.

He even went so far as to do a savage dig at rival Aldi supermarket, making fun of their own Christmas characters.

The entertaining clip begins with the typical quaint winter scenes which we all know mark the start of a heartbreaking Christmas message.

However, this is quickly ruled out as we are abruptly reminded that this is a Lidl business ad.

The ad begins with a snowy scene before going into song

“Could a friendship be ahead?” No, it’s a Christmas ad from Lidl with great prices instead, ”the lyrics say.

Among the mouth-watering snippets of Christmas dinners, the voiceover then attracts a punch from Aldi, whose own Christmas commercial features an adorable Kevin the Carrot.

“We don’t need cute characters when carrots take this good,” Lidl’s voiceover sings.

Lidl is quick to remind viewers that this isn’t your typical Christmas commercial

Referring to other famous commercials, the clip continues, “There is usually a time when we want you to feel sad. But we don’t have time, look at the sparkling wine. This cheese will make you so happy. ”

Lidl’s cheeky dig appeared to be in direct response to Aldi, who described the story of Kevin the Carrot and his mission to return home with his carrot family.

Ryan McDonnell, Commercial Director of Lidl GB also explained that the brand wanted to provide viewers with some entertainment this Christmas.

He said: “We all need a little relief this year, so we wanted our Christmas announcement to show customers that our commitment to high quality at Lidl prices means everyone can believe in a great Christmas – and we had a little fun doing it too! ”
