Johnny Depp quits Fantastic Beasts films after losing UK libel lawsuit

Johnny Depp left the Fantastic beasts franchise following the failure of his libel case against the tabloid The Sun following a 2018 article calling him a “wife beater.”Depp said in a letter posted to Instagram on Friday that he would step down as dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald after the studio requested his resignation. Depp said his announcement came “in light of recent events.”

“I want to inform you that Warner Bros asked me to step down from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic beasts and I have respected and accepted this request, ”said Depp.

Warner Bros. confirmed Depp’s departure and said the role will be recast. “We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date,” the studio said in a statement.

The third Fantastic beasts the film is currently in production. The movie studio noted that the next episode will now open in theaters in the summer of 2022 – a delay from the previous release date of November 12, 2021.

Depp also said he would appeal the ruling earlier this week by a UK judge. After hearing testimony from Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard in the high-profile case, Judge Andrew Nicol said the allegations against Depp were “essentially true”.

Depp sued News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun, and its editor, Dan Wootton, over an article accusing him of assaulting Heard.

“The surreal judgment of the UK court will not change my struggle to speak the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal,” Depp said on Friday.

“My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and my career will not be defined at that time. ”

Fantastic beasts, a prequel franchise from Harry Potter films, grossed nearly US $ 1.5 billion between 2016 fantastic beasts and where to find them and 2018 Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
