Ian Wright insists Chelsea should be seen as a defending champion after their 4-1 win over Sheffield United on Saturday.

Frank Lampard’s side fell behind early at Stamford Bridge after David McGoldrick’s opener in the ninth minute, but Chelsea led 2-1 at half-time after goals from Tammy Abraham and Ben Chilwell.

Thiago Silva and Timo Werner scored in the second half to complete the victory for Chelsea, which put Frank Lampard’s side third in the Premier League after eight games.

And Wright, who won the Premier League title with Arsenal in 1998, believes Chelsea are capable of mounting a credible title challenge this season.

The former Arsenal forward also believes N’Golo Kante will be a ‘lifeblood’ in helping Chelsea forwards thrive.

When asked if Chelsea could be the title champion this season, Wright told Premier League Productions: “Yeah, with what they have.

“But like we said, you have to put the pieces together a bit and I think the goalkeeper [Edouard Mendy], Thiago Silva, [Hakim] Ziyech arrive, [Kai] Havertz arrives, Werner arrives, I think these players and the quality and level of these players yes they should be [title challengers].

But now it’s about putting the pieces together.

For me, playing Kante where he does is going to unleash another vital cog when it comes to the offensive side of things, because he was everywhere today.

“So once everything is knitted together and they start to string together a few wins together, which they seem to be doing now, more clean sheets I’m sure will come as they will be very disappointed with that goal. [against Sheffield United] because it was a bad goal to concede.

“But they have everything in the armory to challenge, without a doubt.
