Which countries are in the front line for the Moderna jab?
The United States, which has spent more than $ 1 billion to fund the vaccine, is promised 20 million doses by the end of the year.
He will get 100 million in total, with an option to buy an additional 400 million.
Japan has ordered 50 million doses, Canada has pledged 20 million, with the option of 36 million more, Switzerland has pledged 4.5 million doses and the EU could get up to 160 million in total.
The other priority countries are Israel and Qatar. The UK will only receive five million doses between April and June.
Moderna became the second high-profile company to confirm interim results from a clinical trial of its coronavirus vaccine, claiming the vaccine is nearly 95% effective
Why were we so slow?
Ministers were in talks with Moderna ahead of the publication of the first results of its first trial in May.
But officials were reportedly concerned that it would take too long to get the vaccine from the European manufacturing site in Switzerland.
What do the results tell us?
Interim results from a study of more than 30,000 people in the United States are based on 95 patients who have been confirmed to have Covid.
Only five of them had received the vaccine, of which 90 were receiving the placebo, suggesting that the vaccine prevents the disease.
Of the 11 who became seriously ill, none had received the vaccine.
How does it compare?
Only two other vaccines have produced early efficacy results showing whether they work so far.
Moderna announced that its vaccine was 94.5% effective a week after German company BioNtech and pharmaceutical company Pfizer said their vaccine was over 90% effective.
The Russian vaccine is said to be 92% effective, but this is based on a smaller number of 20 Covid cases alone.
Is it easy to deploy?
The Pfizer vaccine is of concern because it must initially be stored at around -75 ° C (-103F).
Moderna vaccine should be stored at -20 ° C (-4 ° F), which makes it easier to manage.
While the Pfizer vaccine can be stored at normal refrigerator temperatures of 2 ° C to 8 ° C for five days, Moderna jab can be stored under the same conditions for 30 days.
Moderna’s vaccine works the same way as one developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, using genetic material called coronavirus RNA to trick the body into making the “peak” proteins that the virus uses to attach itself to cells in the body. inside the body.
How it works?
Like the Pfizer vaccine, it contains a genetic code called messenger RNA (mRNA) in a drop of fat.
Injected into the body, it prompts cells to make the spike protein on the coronavirus.
Their immune system can then recognize that part of the virus and fight it off when they encounter it.
How many vaccines do we have quick access to?
The UK has now made deals to obtain a total of 355 million doses of seven individual vaccines.
By the end of the year, ten million doses of the Pfizer vaccine are expected to be available, followed by another 30 million next year.
The government has also obtained up to 100 million doses of the vaccine developed at the University of Oxford.
Other vaccines are expected to come from Valneva, Novavax, Janssen, GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi, and now Moderna.
