HBO’s ‘Realtime’ Breaks Down US Senate Runoff in Georgia – Raw Story

In the season finale of “Real Time” with Bill Maher on HBO, the host considered the January run-off for the two US Senate seats in Georgia. In a special election, Senator Kelly Loelffer (R-GA) is challenged by Rev. Raphael Warnock, the pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.

In the other race, Senator David Perdue (R-GA) is challenged by Jon Ossoff, the Democratic candidate who was once on the staff of civil rights icon John Lewis.

Maher said, “Georgia seems to be in proxy war for all the balls. ”

Maher explained that the 2020 election results were 50-48 in favor of Republicans, but if Democrats won both races it would be a 50-50 tie in the Senate – with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris voting.

Panel guest Alex Wagner, co-host of “The Circus” on HBO, argued that it would be difficult for Democrats to win because moderates may prefer a divided government.

But historian Jon Meacham had a note of hope for Democrats.

“You know, I just think, you know, that once for every man in a nation comes a time to decide. And it’s an existential moment in American democratic history – a lowercase “d” – ”he explained.

“And we still have a chance at that – Georgia voters still have a chance to get it right,” Meacham said.
