The 43-year-old Welsh actress rose to fame in 2007 when she first played the lovable Stacey West – the bubbly character who later married Gavin Shipman, played by Mathew Horne.
Gavin & Stacey continued to be a critical and commercial success – with record numbers to watch the Christmas Special last year.
Due to her role on the series, Joanna has become one of the UK’s most recognizable actresses – and she explained that she has been recognized in the most difficult times.
Speaking to The Sun in Sunday’s Fabulous magazine, Joanna revealed that she had been given a smear test when the nurse doing the check suddenly realized where she had recognized her from.
The actress said, “We were literally halfway through a smear when the nurse told me she knew who I was. When a speculum is pushed to you, someone tells you, “I know who you are! It’s a bit weird.
She went on to say that she had never yet refused to accept a request for a selfie – even obliging when approached hours after giving birth to one of her three children by Caesarean section – despite ‘being’ painful, emotional and full of trapped wind. ”
Joanna has been married to actor James Thornton, 45, husband since 2003, and together they have three children; Eva, seven, Kit, five, and Noah, three.
The actress had a fun anecdote about conceiving her youngest when he was already a busy mother of two.
She explained, “I don’t even remember having sex with James when we had two young children, so I don’t know how we got to have Noah!” At one point we had to say, ‘OK, we need a third one, let’s do it quickly and let’s be done. ”
“But I don’t remember ever having sex because it’s been non-stop kids and exhaustion. ”
A record 17 million Gavin & Stacey fans watched the 2019 Christmas special – and Joanna has given hope that another special could appear on screens in the not too distant future.
She said: “As a fan, surely they have to make another one.
“I don’t think we would ever do another series because I don’t think we could get everyone together long enough, but I can’t imagine they could leave things the way they did. Another special, so it’s done.
