French Europe Minister Clément Beaune took a peaceful tone on fishing – the sticking point for its President Emmanuel Macron.

Mr Beaune told the BBC’s Andrew Marr: ‘We know that if there is no deal there would be no legal access to UK waters for our fishermen. This is also why we would like an agreement.

He added: “I think a deal is possible. We still have a few days to find a solution.

“I hope we can achieve it in the next few days or two weeks. “

Talks resumed after Prime Minister Boris Johnson walked away from the negotiations.

Mr Beaune said a deal was “equally important to both of us,” adding: “I am cautiously optimistic. ”
