After Tuesday night’s Contender Series season finale, four more contracts were awarded, 37 fighters in total secured their regional stage tickets to the Octagon.
Victoria Leonardo, Tucker Lutz, Gloria de Paula and JP Buys all got Dana White’s seal of approval after DWCS Season 4: Week 10. Nick Maximov, who was rushed to hospital after his victory over Oscar Cota , was offered a place on The ultimate fighter de White.
Of all the contract winners, Lutz was arguably the most surprising after scoring his second decision win of the season. White slowly rode it up and took Lutz on a little trip before giving him a chance.
Buys gets a submission, though controversial
In the featured fight, JP Buys and Jacob Silva entered the Contender Series cage – each for the second time in the 2020 season finale. Buys first participated in the Contender Series inaugural season – a second-round TKO loss to Joby Sanchez – and was looking to join his wife Cheyanne on the UFC roster, while Silva gave up on a contract decision winning Jeff Molina in one of the best fights of the 2020 campaign .
Buys dodged under a big right hand from Silva seconds and completed a takedown. After about 90 seconds of work, Buys switched to lateral control. Silva exploded trying to get the fight back on his feet, but Buys managed to bring the fight back to the mat. The purchases worked for a head and arm choke, before adjusting the grip to a modified rear bare choke. Silva – the red face – was able to break the hold and stay there. Purchases would later put down hammer fists and slap a tight guillotine.
Referee Marc Goddard stepped in and stopped the fight, and Silva immediately protested the stop, saying repeatedly, “I was breathing. Silva ended up smiling for the camera and suffered the loss in stride, as Buys won his fifth in a row.
Maximov wins decision despite over 50 pounds disadvantage
Nick Maximov, a protégé of the Diaz brothers, made the move to heavyweight for the first and only time in his career in the night’s main co-event against Oscar Cota. The 22-year-old light heavyweight struggled with Cota’s height at times, especially as he was topped by 54.5 pounds on the scale, but was able to gain control on the pitch for most of the fight. .
With that, Maximov (6-0) went undefeated as a pro, sweeping the scorecards in the process with a pair of 30-26 and a 29-28.
De Paula and Lutz win scorecard sweeps
Gloria de Paula went the distance with Pauline Macias in a strawweight match, but the Brazilian’s performance was super impressive from start to finish. De Paula swept the scorecards including a pair of 10-8s from the judges.
Hoping to claim their second chance, previous season’s winners Lutz and Sherrard Blackledge had a fierce battle for 15 minutes. Ultimately, Lutz was victorious, and although fans will see him in the UFC someday, he won’t be for now as he didn’t secure a contract.
In the opening bout, Victoria Leonardo, several-time contender for Invicta FC, dismissed 22-year-old Australian prospect Chelsea Hackett via TKO in the second round. Leonardo was a 2-1 underdog.
