The total number of deaths from COVID-19 in France has exceeded 40,000 for the first time, while the number of new cases has reached a record high, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
New deaths from the disease have reached 40,169, including 27,660 in hospitals, including 306 in the past 24 hours, the ministry said in its daily report on the outbreak.
The ministry reported 1,748,705 confirmed cases in France, a record 86,852 compared to the 1,661,853 recorded on Friday.
The government put the country back on lockdown for the second time this year just over a week ago in hopes of bringing the outbreak under control as new cases skyrocketed in recent weeks.
The ministry said 20,009 people had been hospitalized in the past seven days and 3,003 were in intensive care.
