Lightweight contender Paul Felder received some well-deserved props last week at UFC Vegas 14 for stepping in with a week’s notice to fight headlining Rafael dos Anjos on Saturday. And although he lost on the scoreboards by split decision, the level of respect fans and fellow fighters already have for him has only increased.
Felder’s general attitude towards his chosen profession continues to garner praise. On Monday, Daniel Cormier revealed that “The Irish Dragon” had accepted a commentary assignment for Dana White’s Contender series on Tuesday.
As DC told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on their weekly show, the UFC first offered him the job, which he reluctantly accepted. Felder, however, called him on Sunday to offer to take on the role.
“He’s going to put on his cute costume and he’s going to call these fights the Contender Series.” It’s Paul Felder for you… He’s a gangster. “@dc_mma reveals that @felderpaul will be in the broadcast booth for #DWCS Tuesday, three days after his fight against GDR pic.twitter.com/0Nvx0QngU5

“I was like, ‘What a legend. Paul Felder will be doing the Contender series tomorrow, ”Cormier said.
“Listen to the week old red Paulie ‘stache from Philly had. Take the fight with three and a half days notice. On Thursday the weight reduction was so difficult. I heard from Ian Larios (Felder’s nutritionist) that this was one of the toughest weight cuts ever. But Paulie, the gangster that he is, is the weight. Not only does he gain weight, but he fights 25 minutes against a former champion of the GDR.
“People don’t forget this,” he added. “The top brass don’t forget that, the fans won’t forget it. When the Contender series starts and you’re up there three days after a fight with RDA that calls for fights, you’re a legend. ”
Cormier went on to praise his broadcast colleague, while also comparing the situation if he was in Felder’s place.
“When I lose, I run away. I run away for six weeks, two months. I’m gone, ”Cormier said. “Because I need to lick my wounds. Paul Felder says, “You know what? I have a job to do. My job is to be there Tuesday, I’ll be there to do it. Unreal.
“People talk about good guys in this sport, and you’re almost tempted to believe that’s wrong,” he added. “Like, ‘this guy is playing, that’s an act.’ Not an act with Paul Felder, man. He really is that guy. He is excellent at his job, he fought for 25 minutes against RDA.
“Yeah, he lost, but does he really have it?” And Tuesday night, when the Contender series begins, Paul Felder will be sitting at this table to call those fights. He’s a gangster.
Felder has served in color commentary for the UFC since 2017, a job he shares with Joe Rogan and other fighters like Cormier, Dan Hardy, Dominick Cruz and Michael Bisping.
