Competitor “Wipeout” dies after completing obstacle course


A “Wipeout” competitor died after completing the game show’s obstacle course, authorities and sources close to the production said on Friday. The man, in his 30s, was pronounced dead in a hospital shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday, Los Angeles County Coroner spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani said. The cause of death has not been released and the man’s name has not been released until relatives can be informed.The reality show, in which contestants navigate an extreme obstacle course with giant balls and traps that often lead to spectacular crashes, aired on ABC from 2008-2014 and is being rebooted by TBS and the production company Endemol Shine North America.

Two people familiar with the production said the man completed the course on the show’s set in Santa Clarita, Calif., When he needed medical attention. He was helped by the medical staff on site until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital. People spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
