Chrissy Metz says Kate’s new script is ‘difficult’ and ‘necessary’

Kate Pearson’s (Chrissy Metz) journey on It’s us Season 5 has only just begun. When the NBC drama returned on Tuesday, October 27, Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) got an update on their upcoming adoption. But that’s not all Kate has to do this season. Recently Metz opened up about her character arc, and it looks like our Katie Girl is going to endure something totally unexpected.

in the It’s us Season 5 premiere, Kate has made it clear that she is not taking sides as Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) continue their feud. Kate and Randall also had an important conversation.

Throughout the episode, viewers got a glimpse of the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery. Then, speaking with Randall, Kate – who suddenly wanted to become a good ally – was forced to reflect on her white privilege, racism, and her brother’s perspective.

Meanwhile, Toby and Kate got a match at the adoption agency. The couple are therefore on the verge of expanding their family.

Long before the It’s us Season 5 premiere, Metz teased an upcoming story for Kate. During a conversation with People in June, the actor revealed that creator Dan Fogelman asked him what she thought of the script. And finally, Metz felt like it was something worth telling. She also hinted that the script could deal with “trauma.”

Then in November 2020, Metz stopped Living with Kelly and Ryan to discuss the new season. The actor also delved into his character’s upcoming arc and when fans can watch it unfold.

“There is a story that will happen soon. It’s something that no one knows Kate faced, ”Metz said. “Dan Fogelman called and said, ‘What do you think about bringing up this topic? And I was like, ‘I think it’s necessary, it’s really important.’ ”

She continued, “There are a lot of people who have experienced it and feel lost in this whole process. So that’s something Toby doesn’t even know, a lot of people don’t know about Kate. It’s difficult. But I think it’s really important. We will see that very soon at the start of the season.

While fans have to wait and see what It’s us Season 5 reserves for Kate, the character will also go through the adoption process. As we saw in the premiere, Kate and Toby found a match through their adoption agency. But even so, Metz recently hinted that the couple’s journey won’t be easy amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“Of course, nothing is simple,” Metz told People of Kate and Toby season 5 arc. “There is a pandemic going on and they are considering adopting. It is very big. ”

She continued, “They might have bitten more than they could chew. So we’ll see. We are on this journey with them and it will certainly not be without incident.

Meanwhile, Fogelman has revealed that Kate and Randall will be in need of “healing” after their conversation when the season opens.

“Kate and Randall are just in a complicated and nebulous place right now and there is a calculation and healing needed,” the designer said, per Glamor. “It’s not just about Randall, but all of them having conversations that never really happened before. It’s the biggest arc on our show this season. It wouldn’t be fair to open and close it in one episode. ”
