Choice of college football qualifiers after week 13

The biggest impact on our writers’ choices this week actually came from the field.

The Ohio State Buckeyes, who have enjoyed unanimous support every week since the Big Ten announced their return, have had their game against Illinois called off. This puts the Buckeyes at risk of missing the six games it takes to qualify for the Big Ten title game, which would hurt their chances of making the college football playoffs. Ohio State will need to secure its next two games of the season to reach the six-game threshold set by the Big Ten at the start of the condensed season. Head coach Ryan Day recently tested positive for COVID-19, so the team may be in a rush to complete their program in the past two weeks.

Due to these circumstances, several teams that were at dawn have climbed in the picks this week. The Cincinnati Bearcats won three votes on their leave, and Florida and Texas A&M both rose through the ranks after big wins on Saturday.

There were only two unanimous caps in Week 13 and both teams impressed over the holiday weekend. Alabama turned the Iron Bowl into a rout when Mac Jones threw five touchdown passes in a 42-13 win. Notre Dame also proved her rank by holding 19th North Carolina and Sam Howell to just 58 yards in the second half in a 31-17 victory at Chapel Hill.

Trevor Lawrence returned for Clemson and claimed a convincing 52-17 victory over Pittsburgh. The Tigers land on 13 lists while the state of Ohio is still trusted by 10 of our writers.
