Cam Newton leads the New England Patriots past the Baltimore Ravens in Sunday night football

FOXBOROUGH, Mass .– The Patriots have struggled to finish games at times this season. They got help from Mother Nature to help them wrap up their biggest victory.Cam Newton threw up a touchdown pass and ran for another score and the Patriots fought in the rain and wind to hold the Baltimore Ravens 23-17 Sunday night.

Damien Harris ran for a career-high 121 yards to help the Patriots (4-5) win back-to-back games for the first time this season. Newton finished 13 of 17 for 118 yards. His touchdown pass, in a short sprint Rex Burkhead in the first quarter, was his from the first since Week 3 – a four-game period.

“Just find ways to win. That’s about it, ”Newton said of the last two wins. “Have a good weeks of training and follow it with performances on the line.… We just have to keep doing that in the future.

The Ravens’ road winning streak ended at 10. Baltimore (6-3) is 0-6 in the regular season in New England.

Lamar Jackson was 24 of 34 for 249 yards and two touchdowns for the Ravens.

“We are checked. Nobody likes to lose, ”Jackson said. “We have a lot of talent in our team. We have to regroup.

New England bottled him on the field for most of the game, limiting him to just 11 carries for 55 yards.

“Overall, we certainly played a lot better than last year,” said Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

Versed 23-17, Baltimore had a chance to take the lead with 7:09 left in the fourth quarter. But possession quickly collapsed after a wandering cross slam Matt Skura resulted in a loss of 16 yards.

The Patriots recovered the ball and managed to pick up enough first downs to cut the time to just over a minute to play before handing the ball back.

As rain and wind swept over the pitch, the Ravens started the drive with a penalty, pushing them back to their own 9. Facing 4th and 26th on 21, Jackson had JK Dobbins opened along the sideline, but Dobbins blew the ball up for an incompletion and a roll on downs.

The loss came with additional costs for Baltimore, who will also be without one of their top blockers for the foreseeable future after a close end. Nick Boyle was taken off the field with 6:24 left in the third quarter. The team said he sustained a knee injury as he had his left stuck under him as he was tackled by Terez Room following a reception of 4 yards.

Coach John Harbaugh said Boyle has finished the season.

With rain blown sideways across the field due to a persistent 15 mph wind that blew higher than that, both quarterbacks threw sparingly early on. The passes they attempted were often no more than 15 quick yards or shorter discharges.

Most of the exceptions were attributable to the patriots.

They used a trick just before half-time to take a 13-10 lead. Facing second and sixth of the Ravens 24, Newton threw what appeared to be a large receiver screen for Jakobi Meyers. But Meyers swiveled and threw a pass to a wide open Rex Burkhead for a touchdown.

“This is something that we have been practicing for the past two weeks. I just didn’t know when it was going to happen, ”Meyers said. “I was just trying to be a playmaker.”

Harbaugh admitted it was linebacker Patrick McQueen’s mental error.

“Rookie mistake. He was on his boyfriend, hesitated a little. Burkhead played a really good game on it, ”Harbaugh said.

Baltimore was without two pillars in defense with tackle Calais Campbell (calf) and linebacker LJ Fort (finger) at once. Cornerback Jimmy Smith is also sitting with an ankle injury.

“It’s impossible to measure it, but I’m sure it had an impact,” Harbaugh said.

New England kept things going in their first practice of the third quarter.

First, Harris broke a 25-yard run to enter Ravens territory. This was followed by Newton connecting with Meyers on a 26-yard pass that also included an unnecessary roughness call on cornerback Marcus Peters for a shot out of bounds. Newton ran it on the next 4-yard play to go 20-10.

Ravens: DT Brandon Williams left with an ankle injury did not return. … CB Obligations Terrell needed help leaving the field in the third quarter after injuring his knee.

Due to the unfavorable conditions, both teams mainly relied on running the ball in the first half. Of the 27 games in the quarter, 17 were in progress. The result was a period that lasted only 28 minutes.

Patriots cornerback JC JacksonHis interception in the dying seconds of the second quarter was his sixth pick of the season. He now has one interception in five straight games, a new franchise record.

Ravens: Host Tennessee next Sunday.

Patriots: In Houston next Sunday.
