ATHENS, Greece (AP) – A bust of the ancient god Hermes, in good condition, has been found in central Athens during sewer work, authorities said on Sunday.

Greece’s Culture Ministry said the head, one of many that served as street markers in ancient Athens, was found on Friday and appears to be around 300 BC – either late from the 4th century BC, ie the beginning of the 3rd century. . He portrayed Hermes at “a mature age,” the ministry said, contrary to his usual depictions of young.

The head is in the style of the famous Greek sculpture Alcamenes, which flourished in the second half of the fifth century BC, the ministry said.

After serving as a street marker, the head, at one point, was built into the wall of a drainage duct, the ministry said.
