It’s been three months since Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman deceased, at a shocking young age, of a largely undisclosed butt of colon cancer. Disney and Marvel Studios were careful to give Boseman’s legacy some space in the following months, aggressively pushing back on any discussion of what their star’s sudden death means for one of the MCU’s most important potential franchises of the last few days, or how they might try to move forward with the long jobs Black panther 2.

Now, however, THR reports That move started on plans to film Ryan Coogler’s sequel to his 2018 blockbuster, including multiple indications that the film will begin filming in July 2021, with production set to run for at least six months. Obviously, it’s not yet clear how the film will attempt to move forward without Boseman’s King T’Challa at its center, but Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett are all expected to return – with at least some. of THRSources suggest Wright will see an expanded role. (Her character, Shuri, was already a favorite from the first film and took over from the Black Panther herself in the comics.) Narcos: Mexico, is also in talks to play one of the film’s antagonists.

As THR note, this delicate back and forth between decorum and the harsh realities of filmmaking comes at a fairly busy time for Marvel Studios; already in the middle of a post-End of Game shortcoming, 2020 ended up being the first year since 2009 to not see an MCU movie land in theaters. The studio is still trying to figure out what to do with movies like the already filmed Black Widow, as well as chart the course of Disney + MCU shows, and devise a plan to recover from the death of one of its most important stars. The fact that they would have to move forward on Coogler’s film at some point was pretty much inevitable, but the level of scrutiny they will come through as they try to find a respectful way to deal with this material in light of multiple industry disruptions. tragedies remain an added difficulty for what was already likely to be an extremely difficult film to make.
