Ben Shapiro: Trump is not responsible for coronavirus deaths – but Dems hope immoral charge defeats him

Until COVID-19 hit, President Trump was on track to re-election.

On domestic politics, Trump’s tax and regulatory cuts have propelled the economy to heights not seen in 50 years. His education department cracked down on the Star Chamber courts applied on college campuses in cases of alleged sexual misconduct. He appointed dozens of highly qualified constitutional judges, including three Supreme Court justices.

When it comes to foreign policy, Trump is the first president in my life not to engage in foreign wars. He negotiated historic Middle East peace agreements between Israel and Arab countries. He resisted Chinese predations in an unprecedented way.

If that election had taken place in February, Trump probably would have won. And he probably would have won quite easily. That’s because Trump’s often terrible rhetoric would have been overshadowed by his actions, and Americans’ pessimism about Trump’s character would have receded their optimism about his agenda.

Then COVID-19 hit.

The economy, in large part thanks to excessive foreclosure policies, has collapsed. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have died. And Trump’s rhetorical blunders took renewed seriousness as Americans sought stable leadership and instead found the usual Trumpian stew of bloviation, exaggeration, and anger.

COVID-19 has become the Democrats’ main electoral ploy. Their argument is patently false and immoral. It’s an argument repeated ad nauseum by presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden and his running mate, Senator Kamala Harris of California, and their allies in the media.

The argument, expressed by Biden, is: “220,000 Americans dead … Whoever is responsible for these many deaths should not remain President of the United States of America.” ”

But, of course, Trump is not responsible for these deaths.

Trump should have spoken earlier about wearing masks. He should have acted more eagerly by developing tests. But COVID-19 has spread around the world, killing hundreds of thousands of people, and is now spreading almost unchecked across Europe, where lockdowns and masking have been rife for months.

In fact, Democratic governors praised Trump for giving them the ventilators and personal protective equipment they were looking for. The White House’s Operation Warp Speed accelerated vaccine development in a historically unprecedented way. The hardest hit states in terms of deaths per million were nearly all states whose governors were not following Trump’s preferred anti-lockdown policies.

Equally important, Democrats have never provided an alternative plan when it comes to COVID-19. Biden’s stated plan – to speed up a vaccine, socially distance, mask more, create local authority for targeted lockdowns – is no different than Trump’s.

Biden was having packed rallies in early March. Democrats have repeatedly tolerated or celebrated mass rallies of millions during the pandemic, provided those rallies meet their political approval.

The narrative that Trump is responsible for the COVID-19 death toll is therefore a religious argument, not a factual one. It is based on a perverse view of the universe by which Trump is responsible for all evil, a miasmatic orange Satan who haunts the earth. And, according to the theory, if Trump is circumcised, COVID-19 will be controlled by someone with a firmer hand.

It’s absurd. The pandemic will continue on Wednesday regardless of who is elected. But as long as Trump is called a real scourge, rather than COVID-19, he will pay the political price. And the so-called Science Party will continue to promote this anti-science lie throughout election day.
